AWS Reveals 2026 Heroes Cohort: Three Visionaries Driving Cloud Innovation Across Continents
AWS has officially announced its first Heroes cohort of 2026, recognizing three exceptional developer community leaders for their transformative work in cloud architecture, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The honorees—Maurizio Argoneto, Ray Goh, and Sheyla Leacock—were selected for their rare blend of technical expertise and community-building impact, spanning from rural Italian villages to Southeast Asian classrooms and Latin American cybersecurity forums.
“These Heroes exemplify how true leadership in tech extends far beyond code,” said an AWS spokesperson. “They are building bridges, mentoring the next generation, and making cloud culture accessible to everyone, everywhere.”
Breaking Down the 2026 AWS Heroes
Maurizio Argoneto – Community Hero (Pignola, Italy)
Argoneto, a CTO and founder of the AWS User Group Basilicata, has spent over a decade pioneering cloud culture in a region where tech ecosystems were virtually nonexistent. He organizes an international tech conference in a small mountain village, blending deep technical sessions on cloud architectures and DevOps with unconventional networking experiences that draw attendees from across Europe.

“Maurizio shows that community is not about location—it's about connection,” noted the AWS Heroes program director. “He mentors across generations, from introducing children to coding to guiding university students into cloud careers.” Argoneto’s efforts have created a unique space where global experts and local talent converge, making him a standout Community Hero.
Ray Goh – Artificial Intelligence Hero (Singapore)
Ray Goh, a longtime AWS machine learning leader, founded The Gen-C (a Generative AI Learning Community) in 2024. He regularly conducts public workshops at libraries across Singapore on topics from LLM fine-tuning to AI agents on AWS. Goh has spoken at major conferences including AWS re:Invent and AWS Summit ASEAN, and guest-authored for the AWS Machine Learning Blog.
His impact extends to enterprise-scale initiatives: in 2020, he led the world’s largest enterprise AWS DeepRacer program for DBS Bank, upskilling over 3,100 employees. In 2025 alone, he trained more than 1,300 ASEAN students in LLM techniques. “Ray’s ability to democratize AI education is unmatched,” said a community partner. “His work teaching women, children, and youths has been featured on CNBC and Euromoney.”
Sheyla Leacock – Security Hero (Panama City, Panama)
Sheyla Leacock, an IT security professional and international speaker, contributes to the global cloud and cybersecurity community through mentoring and technical authorship. She has spoken at AWS Summit Mexico, AWS Summit LATAM in Peru, and led PeerTalk sessions at AWS re:Invent. She also leads the AWS User Group in Panama, where she regularly facilitates discussions on cloud security best practices.

“Sheyla represents the growing influence of Latin American voices in cybersecurity,” an AWS security lead commented. “Her work bridging local user groups with global knowledge networks is vital for the region's digital resilience.”
Background
The AWS Heroes program honors individuals who go beyond technical contributions to foster inclusive communities. Each year, a small cohort is selected from thousands of nominees worldwide. Heroes are recognized in categories like Community, AI, and Security, reflecting the program’s broadening scope.
2026 marks the first cohort of the year, with additional Heroes expected later. The program has grown from a small initiative into a global network of over 300 active Heroes who speak at events, author technical content, and mentor aspiring cloud practitioners.
What This Means
This cohort signals AWS’s continued investment in grassroots cloud adoption. With Heroes operating in underserved regions—from rural Italy to Panama—the program is proving that technical leadership can flourish anywhere. The diversity of expertise—community building, generative AI education, and cybersecurity—reflects the shifting priorities of the cloud industry.
For developers and enterprises, these Heroes offer real-world models of how to scale impact through mentoring and local events. As cloud technologies evolve, the human element remains critical. As the AWS spokesperson concluded, “These are the people who make the cloud real for others.”
